Shopify coding by Abra, Los Angeles

Custom Shopify development for stores that need more than a theme can give.

Theme code and custom features for Shopify stores. You get a store that does what your business needs, and code the next developer can follow.

When a theme stops being enough

You might not need a new theme.

Another app or a whole new theme isn't always the answer. Often a focused piece of custom code does the job better, and it's yours to keep.

Theme development

Custom Liquid sections and blocks, JSON templates, and metafields and metaobjects wired into the theme editor, so your team can change content without calling a developer.

Theme work

Custom features

Product configurators, bundle logic, filtering your theme can't do, tiered or wholesale pricing displays, and front-end work around the subscription app you already use.

Custom features

Speed and cleanup

Removing leftover app code, cutting scripts that load on every page, fixing image and font loading, and tidying years of quick fixes so the theme is fast and easier to change.

Speed work

How the code is written

Code that the next person can work with.

A lot of Shopify stores carry years of quick fixes: copied snippets, three apps loading the same library, CSS overrides on top of overrides. It works until it doesn't, and then every change gets slower and riskier.

We build inside Shopify's own structure. Sections and blocks instead of hardcoded templates, settings in the theme editor instead of values buried in code, and data in metafields where it belongs. Work happens on a duplicate theme and you review it on a preview link before anything is published.

Abra is run by Ronen Hirsch, who is a designer as well as a developer, so new features look like part of your store, not bolted on. We also built and run Abra Sections, a Shopify app with Built for Shopify status, so we work with Shopify's review standards every day.

What you can expect

  • Work done on a duplicate theme, never on your live one
  • Settings your team can change in the theme editor
  • No extra app where a few lines of Liquid will do
  • A direct line to the developer writing the code

Speed and clean-up

A slow store is usually a code problem.

Large unoptimized images, app scripts that stay on the page after the app is uninstalled, and render-blocking JavaScript are the usual suspects. We audit the theme, remove what's dead, and fix what's left, with Core Web Vitals measured before and after so you can see the difference.

  • Leftover app code found and removed
  • Images served at the right size with Shopify's image filters
  • Scripts deferred or loaded only on the pages that need them
  • Theme refactors when patching is no longer worth it

Questions people ask first

Do I need Shopify Plus for custom development?

No. Theme development, custom sections, metafields and most custom features work on any Shopify plan. Checkout customization is the main exception: changing the checkout itself is a Shopify Plus feature.

Will custom code break when my theme updates?

It can if it is pasted into the core theme files. We keep custom work in its own sections, snippets and assets so it is easy to find and carry over. If you plan to move to a newer theme version, we can scope that move as part of the work.

Should I use an app or custom code?

Sometimes an app from the Shopify App Store is the right answer, and we will say so. Custom code makes sense when the app adds weight to every page, costs more each month than the feature is worth, or can't do what you need. We look at the tradeoff before writing anything.

Can you work on a store another developer built?

Yes, most of our Shopify work starts that way. We read through the theme first, tell you what we find, and then give you an estimate for the change you asked for.

How do you price a project?

After we understand the work, we scope and provide a fixed estimate.
